We all have our version of the ‘beetroot dip and cheese moment’.
Mine was on a Monday morning. I was dressed for an important client event – crisp white blouse, pale pink skirt, feeling prepared. I opened the fridge to grab what I needed for morning tea duty… and saw the cheese.
Half gone. Bite marks in the remaining piece.
And in a flash of frustration, I succumbed to overwhelm. I slammed the cheese and the dip onto the bench. The dip exploded. Beetroot dip everywhere!
My kids rushed in, wide-eyed.
I was standing there – splattered, fuming. I had a choice. Yell? Or regroup?
I took a breath. ‘I’m going to get changed. When I come back, this kitchen had better be spotless.’
And it was.
Because of course, it wasn’t really about the cheese.
When we’re overwhelmed, small things become big things. We lose perspective. And when that happens as leaders, it’s easy to let fear – not purpose – drive our actions.
Fearless leadership isn’t about never cracking under pressure. It’s about noticing when you do – and choosing to circle back to what matters most. To come back to your purpose.
So here’s my question for you: Where have you made it about the cheese this week?
And what would change if, in that moment, you came back to purpose?
