What makes a powerful learning environment?
I had the privilege of joining a small group of speakers in Sydney for an afternoon and evening of learning, feedback and growth. It reminded me just how powerful a well-designed learning environment can be, not just for the insights shared, but for the courage it invites and the confidence it builds.
So what makes a great learning environment?
-
A balance between stretch and support. You want to be pushed, but not overwhelmed. Encouraged, but not coddled. That sweet spot creates real growth.
-
How you show up matters. A strong learning environment needs your intent to learn, willingness to share, and an openness to both giving and receiving challenging feedback. The mindset you bring sets the tone for the experience.
-
Mutual belief in value. When you believe others in the room have something to teach you, and you also know you bring something to the table, magic happens. Learning becomes a two-way street.
-
A brilliant teacher. Someone who knows the space you want to grow in, and can communicate in a way that makes sense to you. (In this case Leanne Christie was the sensei. Her feedback was incisive, generous, and impactful.)
-
Safety to be vulnerable. We are not polished as we learn, and that’s okay. Vulnerability in this context might sound like:
-
‘I don’t know what to do here.’
-
‘I’m trying something new, can I get your feedback?’
-
Or even: ‘I have no idea, but I trust my inner knowing will guide me.’
-
-
A sense of fun. It’s hard to be creative when your brain is worried or fearful. Laughter opens up space for learning.
-
Food and connection. There’s something about sharing a meal (and maybe a drink!) afterwards that facilitates debriefs which deepen trust and learning.
This experience, Leanne’s Million Dollar Mastermind, had all of this. Small group. Shared intention. Honest feedback. Real support. And a whole lot of love and laughter. The kind of environment where everyone, no matter their stage of development, walked away with something valuable.
If you don’t have a learning environment like this in your world right now, go find one. And if you can’t find it, create it.
The right environment doesn’t just support learning. It accelerates it.
